Before the Thanksgiving break, middle school students were given the opportunity to exercise their first community vote, resulting in their winning middle school faculty member receiving a pie to the face. This fun activity was developed by the Social Studies Department as part of a year-long civic lesson that aims to teach students about the importance of voting and that their voices matter.
Every month, students will have the power to vote for changes in their school, such as the lunch items offered in the cafeteria or the products sold in the school store. The pie contest was designed to be an exciting start to this initiative and to engage students in the democratic process. Students were given the chance to vote for their preferred candidate from among several faculty and staff members. Those students who participated in the vote also had the bonus of having their names entered into a drawing to throw the pies. The results of the voting were streamed live to each classroom, and the winners were announced during the last period of the day.
The winners of this month’s vote were Mrs. Buckley and Mrs. McNeilley, with Mrs. McNeilley celebrating her last day before retiring from RCS Central School District. The lucky students chosen to throw the pies were Taryn Burns and Emma Reinisch.
