Don’t blink, or you’ll miss them! The Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary Girls on the Run have been busy preparing for their upcoming Capital District Girls on the Run 5K on Saturday, May 21, in Schenectady. Our PBC student runners will be running with over 750 other local athletes.
They have been working towards the 5k event since the last week of March, and it will be the culmination of all their hard work. Last week they did a practice 5K in preparation for the coming race, cheered on along the way by students, families, and staff!
Girls on the Run of the Capital District is a non-profit organization that aims to create an environment where every girl is empowered and supported in their limitless potential and ability to pursue their goals. The Pieter B. Girls on the Run is brand new this year and is run by Co-Advisors Ms. Hannah Barry, Ms. Beth Rice, and Ms. Elizabeth Dwyer.
During meetings, they, of course, run, but they also talk as a group about ways to create a kinder and more supportive environment while improving themselves and their community. Each meeting starts with a review of the goal from the last meeting. Coaches then introduce a new goal for the day. Goals focus on improving the confidence, character, and competence of each runner. Girls are encouraged to use their "Star Power" for living healthy happy lives.
“The girls are psyched for this weekend,” said Girls on the Run Co-Advisor Hannah Barry. “They have really been giving it their all and encouraging their teammates these past couple of weeks. We are so proud of them and know they are going to do amazing at the 5k!”
Big thank you to all of the staff, students, and families who have been cheering them on and supporting them on this journey!
Good luck, PBC Girls on the Run!! You got this!
