Recently, A.W. Becker Elementary kindergarten classes participated in discussions, with grandparent volunteer Tim Nicholson, to learn about plants, flowers, and more importantly, how healthy soil contributes to a successful garden. During their discussion, students were brought in soil samples to compare color and understand the ingredients of different types of soil. Students also found out why plants, trees and gardens are key to a healthy environment and lifestyle.
This year, the AWB campus has multiple garden beds designed to provide classrooms with opportunities to learn farm-to-school connections as part of their curriculum. Situated on the north end of the school building, students this week began planting their gardens. Next year, each grade level will be offered the opportunity to enrich their classroom experience by signing up to adopt and plant a garden bed.
“We are excited to launch this opportunity for teachers and students,” said AWB First Grade Teacher Kate Thibault. “By combining nature with learning, we are able to share an exciting project for our students. We look forward to seeing the results of our work being performed in the classroom transferred to our gardens.”
In addition, Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary is planning to have garden beds placed on their campus during the 2021-22 school year.
