In a well-deserved achievement, Brandon Herwick, RCS Physical Education Teacher, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYS AHPERD). This honor recognizes Brandon for his exceptional contributions to the field of physical education and his unwavering commitment to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment for students.
The Teacher of the Year Award is given to individuals who demonstrate excellence in teaching, leadership, and overall performance in physical education, health education, adapted physical education, and dance education. It is awarded by professional colleagues, making this recognition particularly meaningful as it reflects the hard work and dedication Brandon has shown in his field. During his acceptance speech, Brandon dedicated his award to his students, teachers, teaching partner, and collaborators. “You amplify my joy. You’ve taught me many lessons that I cherish and employ. I am so very grateful for the gift of your friendship, for being a colleague, and for being an inspiration. I cherish you and AWB and I truly share this honor and award with you!”
As an educator at A.W. Becker Elementary, Brandon has earned a reputation as a passionate and inspiring teacher who makes physical education both fun and accessible. Alongside his co-teacher, Megan McClave, Brandon creates an engaging and supportive environment where students are excited to learn, grow, and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
Brandon’s approach to teaching focuses not only on improving students' physical fitness but also on helping them grow valuable life skills that positively influence every aspect of their lives. His commitment to shaping well-rounded individuals physically, mentally, and socially has earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, students, and their families.
Beyond his work at A.W. Becker, Brandon’s passion for teaching extends well beyond the classroom. He is a dedicated mentor and educator to his peers, sharing his expertise and motivation with physical education teachers across New York State and the country. Through workshops, conferences, and professional development sessions, Brandon inspires other educators to bring the same enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication to their classrooms that he brings to his own.
Earlier this year, Brandon was recognized by the NYS AHPERD Capital Zone chapter as Teacher of the Year and was honored at a February RCS Board of Education Meeting. True to his kind and giving nature, Brandon used this opportunity to recognize and celebrate his peers, who were all there to support him. Congratulations, Brandon, on this well-deserved honor!
