A.W. Becker's first graders have finished their lesson on communities and community helpers with a donation drive to help the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. First graders started their community lesson with some special guests throughout the month. Parents of students came to visit classrooms to discuss their jobs like, construction workers, barbers, and pharmacists, and how their jobs help a community.
Throughout the community lesson, students read a variety of books that highlighted children helping their communities and discussed ways for students at A.W. Becker to be involved in their communities.
“We decided to turn the conversation into a real experience, and organized a school-wide donation drive for the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society! The kids are SO excited to see the positive impact they can make on our community” said Lauren Miller, first-grade teacher.
Students in Ms. Miller and Ms. Chamberlain's class made posters to hang up around the school, and a flyer for the drive went home to all grade levels. The students placed donation bins around the school for a collection of pet supplies.
Over February break, the pet donations collected at the end of January and the beginning of February were presented to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The shelter has offered a tour of the facility to our A.W. Becker families.
What a Purrfect ending to a great lesson! Check out the photos from A.W. Becker First Grade.
