Last week, Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School hosted its monthly PBIS Assembly. This month they focused on the theme of respect and being respectful to others!
PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is a team-based approach to teaching behavioral expectations throughout the school. It is based on a proactive approach that teaches the behaviors, reinforces and recognizes students who model them, and has systems in place to support students who may be having a difficult time. Each RCS School uses a unique PBIS plan to foster a solid support system for their students and staff.
"The students always have a great time at the PBIS assemblies this year," said PBC Social Worker Hannah Barry. "Our goal is to teach the PBIS rules and behavior expectations, and the students can definitely tell you what it means to be Respectful, Responsible & Safe at Pieter B! Since we are all working on the same goals together, it gives us a sense of community and pride in our school.”
Each month PBC hosts community guests at their PBIS assembly, and last week they hosted Sergeant Kelly & Officer Palmateer from the Coeymans Police Department, along with PBC SRO Deputy Quay. The guests were interviewed by 5th-grade students, who asked questions like, “What does the word respect mean to you?” and “How can we show respect to our friends, family, and adults?”
The guests also got to participate in the "How to Bee Awesome" game show in which the grown-ups play against the students to see who knows more about being respectful. The students also learned more about how to be respectful to the new PBC Facility Dog, Odie. It was safe to say it was an exciting and enjoyable experience!
Big thank you to the special guests and the PBIS assembly committee, who works all year to organize these fun and informative assemblies! The team consists of PBC Staff, Ms. Barry, Mrs. Blair, Mr. King, Ms. LaFranier & Mr. Hilker.
