The RCS Central School District is launching a student poster contest to help bring attention to the importance of being in school and how attendance can often negatively impact performance and social-emotional health. All RCS students are invited to participate and create a poster that informs our students and community of the importance of attending school and promotes our attendance slogan, Be an Attendance H.E.R.O (Here, Every Day, Ready, On Time)!!
Attendance is an important part of each and every student's education. Did you know…
- Missing just 1 day every 2 weeks makes a student chronically absent.
- A chronically absent child will cumulatively miss almost 1½ years of school by 12th grade.
- Research shows:
- Only 17% of students who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are able to read at grade level in third grade, compared to 64% of students with good attendance.
- Half of all students who miss 2-4 days of school in September will go on to miss almost a month of school by the end of the year.
- In the first 2 months of the 2022-23 school year:
- 436 RCS students - almost 25% - were chronically absent.
- 170 RCS students were absent 8 or more days (twice the chronically absent rate).
The winning posters will be used throughout our school buildings and community as well as on social media to encourage students to be an attendance H.E.R.O: here, every day, ready, on time! See below for more details about the contest! Winning posters will also receive a prize! The prize will be announced in early January.
