Ever seen an opportunity so great you can’t get to it fast enough? That is how second-grade teacher at Pieter B., Tricia Grogan, felt when she saw a Facebook post from local writer and news reporter John Gray asking teachers to apply to win a donation of 100 books for their school.
Only 28 schools of the 80 that applied would be selected, and five lucky classrooms at Pieter B. made the list! The books went to the second-grade classrooms of Mrs. Grogan and Miss Dawson, Ms. Stott, Mr. Koblenzer, and Ms. Burns, as well as the first-grade class of Mrs. Travis and Mrs. Collins and the fourth-grade class of Ms. Maroney. All of these teachers joined together to apply for the books for their students.
The school received copies of Mr. Gray’s books, Sweet Polly Petals, and Keller’s Heart. Both books teach students about spreading kindness, and supporting others, even if they are different from you. A very important message taught by our teachers throughout the year, in stories told through the lens of students their age.
“We were thrilled to be selected to receive the books,” said second-grade teacher Tricia Grogan. “Not only was this a great opportunity, but the books teach our students about supporting their peers and how to create a loving and caring community. It was a wonderful opportunity, and the students are really enjoying the books!”
Students received the books and went straight to reading them as soon as they could! We would like to extend a BIG ‘thank you’ to the teachers who applied, as well as John Gray and anyone who made a donation to help get the books to our students! To show their appreciation for the books, the classrooms put together thank you cards and sent them to Mr. Gray, he even shared the cards on Facebook.
