Water Testing Results: RCS High School

Letter issued on Dec. 19

Dear RCS High School Families:

As you may be aware, the district conducted water testing of all drinking fountains and cafeteria faucets at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School last spring and the results showed that no source exceeded the state’s action level for lead concentration. This letter is to provide you with information about some follow-up water testing that the district recently conducted in accordance with a new state law requiring testing of all school sources of water that are “currently used or potentially used for drinking or cooking purposes.”

When the new law was enacted in September the district took the additional steps of testing all bathroom and classroom sinks to ensure compliance with the law. We recently received the results for the high school.

Out of a total 161 additional tests, samples from 25 science room sinks and one sink in the school store indicated a concentration of lead above the state’s action level of 15 parts per billion. The faucet results indicated levels ranging between 16 and 150 parts per billion. Please note that these sinks are not designated for drinking or cooking purposes. According to the EPA human skin does not absorb lead in water, so hand washing is not a concern.

However, when a water source tests above the action level, schools are required to ensure the water is not used for drinking and implement a remediation plan. There are now signs reminding users that the sinks should be used for handwashing only and not drinking. The district will retest these sinks to verify the exact source of the lead contamination so it can develop appropriate remediation plans. Complete results are posted on the district website, www.rcscsd.org under QUICK Links.

Please be assured that the district is following all of the regulations to ensure that we continue to provide safe, healthy drinking water throughout the district. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Sincerely,
Robert K. Libby, RCS Superintendent
Tom DiAcetis, RCS High School Principal
