Water Testing Results: A.W. Becker

Letter issued on Nov. 29

Dear A.W. Becker Families:

As you may be aware, the district conducted water testing of all drinking fountains and cafeteria faucets at A.W. Becker last spring and the results showed that no source exceeded the state’s action level for lead concentration. This letter is to provide you with information about some follow-up water testing that the district recently conducted in accordance with a new state law requiring testing of all school sources of water that are “currently used or potentially used for drinking or cooking purposes.”

When the new law was enacted in September the district took the additional steps of testing all bathroom and classroom sinks to ensure compliance with the law. We recently received the results for A.W. Becker.

Out of a total 67 additional tests, samples from one hand washing station indicated a concentration of lead above the state’s action level of 15 parts per billion. The faucet results indicated 36 parts per billion. Please note that this sink is not designated for drinking or cooking purposes. According to the EPA human skin does not absorb lead in water, so hand washing is not a concern.

However, when a water source tests above the action level, schools are required to ensure the water is not used for drinking and implement a remediation plan. Therefore, the affected faucet was immediately taken out of service and will be replaced by December 1. At that time we will collect additional water samples from those outlets for re-testing.
Please be assured that the district is following all of the regulations to ensure that we continue to provide safe, healthy drinking water throughout the district. If you have any questions, please contact me.
