2017-18 budget passed by voters

Residents of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk took to the polls Tuesday, May 16, approving a $45.8 million budget for the 2017-18 school year, as well as the bus purchase proposition and community library vote.

With 538 in favor and 294 opposed, residents approved the $45,829,423 budget for the 2017-18 school year. The budget calls for an increase in total spending of 2.6 percent from the 2016-17 school year and a tax levy increase of 1.25 percent, which equals the district’s limit based on the state’s tax levy cap calculation. The budget continues all current programs and services for students and allows the district to expand on its initiative to offer students greater access to instructional technologies.

The approval of the bus proposition (yes: 537 no: 289) allows the district to purchase six new buses as part of the district maintenance and replacement plan. The state will reimburse the district for approximately 55 percent of the purchase cost.

Residents also voted to fill three Board of Education seats, re-electing school board candidates Tina Furst-Hotaling with 573 votes, William McFerran with 537 votes, and electing new board member Peter Ross with 535 votes.

The RCS Community Library vote passed with 593 in favor and 297 opposed. Residents also re-elected two candidates to the library board of trustees: Megan Aurelia with 631 votes and Josie Bruno with 667 votes.
