Voters to decide on bus proposition

Efforts to implement a long- term bus replacement program at RCS are well underway. One of the goals is to reduce the age of the fleet so that the average age of a bus does not exceed 10 years. A newer fleet coupled with an experienced team of mechanics resulted in a 96 percent passage rate on Department of Transportation inspections, well above the industry standard of 90 percent.

The district would like to continue the successful program and is asking community members to consider the purchase of six new buses at a cost not to exceed $705,327.72. The proposed purchase includes three 42-passenger diesel buses with cameras, air conditioning and five-year-extended warranties at a cost not to exceed $115,054.62 each; and three 42-passenger propane buses with cameras, air conditioning and five-year-extended warranties at a cost not to exceed $120,054.62 each.

The district would finance the purchases with short term, bond anticipation notes. The state would reimburse the district for approximately 55 percent of approved transportation expenditures including bus purchases, this aid is based on the cost of the buses spread out over five years.
