RCS senior competes in national competition

Elison Foronda, a Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk senior, was one of two Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School (CTE) automotive students earned a top 20 finish in the National Automotive Technology Competition in New York City.

"We placed 20th, which is the best we have done in the last three years. I am pleased. The kids worked hard," said Capital Region BOCES CTE teacher Brian LaCroix.

Foronda and Vincent Degni of Shenendehowa competed against 29 other teams from across the United States in the national competition, which took place during the International Car Show at the Javits Center in New York City on April 17, 18 and 19.

The annual competition is a chance for students to show their knowledge of automotive computer diagnostics, engines, technology and more.

In preparation for the competition, the CTE students worked with representatives of Destination Kia, as well as CTE faculty, to get a feel for specific problems they would have to solve during the competition, as well as performed tasks that were part of the national competition.

The national competition is billed as "a test of skill, a measure of knowledge and a race
against the clock all rolled into one."

"It was a great experience," said Foronda of the event.

The students, both seniors in the AYES automotive technician program, have divergent plans for the future.

Foronda is pursuing a college degree in automotive technology at Hudson Valley Community College while Degni plans to study aviation mechanics at an undetermined school.

"Going to CTE has helped me learn a lot about the industry and reaffirmed for me that this is what I want to do," Foronda said.
