Letter to Parents Regarding New Nutrition Standards
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are undergoing
changes following the recent implementation of new Nutrition Standards under
the Federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. RCS will be following the
federally-established timeline for the introduction of these new standards,
beginning in the 2012-13 school year
The primary intention of the legislation and new nutrition standards is to
adjust the dietary guidelines that were established fifteen years ago to
align with current research and nutrition recommendations. Studies show that
while students of all ages need the same nutrients to help their brains and
bodies grow strong, they need different amounts of those nutrients during
different periods of their development.
New portion controls and caloric limits will be in place this year, which
reflect the USDA recommendations for healthy Americans. We are balancing our
plates to best meet the caloric needs and the portioning of fruits,
vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy for children at all ages, and to help
your child achieve their peak performance in their academic, athletic and
RCS food service is dedicated to providing nutritious and delicious meals
for our students, and to teaching them the critical role nutrition plays in
fueling their mind and body. Great eating habits now can keep your child
healthy throughout the school year, and for the rest of their lives.
